Work has started this week on the refurbishment of the existing sports court in Grant Thorold Park.

The park's 'PlayZone' multi-use games area (MUGA) will see a complete overhaul of the tarmacked sports area including the installation of basketball hoops, benches, goals, fencing and LED floodlighting.

The PlayZone Programme is designed to address inequalities in physical activity and access to facilities, with a focus on funding community-led spaces. The initiative aims to provide safe, accessible mini pitches that encourage groups to be more active.

The revamped PlayZone, measuring approximately 30 by 20 metres, will feature line markings for football and basketball games.

The facility will be free to use, with a booking system in place to ensure fair access and safety. There will also be opportunities for more formal sessions, which can be booked for a small fee.

During the renovation works, the current sports court will be out of use. Deliveries to the site are expected in the first week, followed by ground works and construction.

For safety reasons, Heras fencing will be erected around the site while work is underway.

In the initial stages, the canopy of the large tree currently overhanging the court will be raised to accommodate the new fencing and floodlights. Checks will be carried out prior to any work on the tree to ensure there are no nesting birds.

The planning application for this development received the green light earlier this year.
