Netflix’s newest psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes has left the internet utterly divided, much like the best-selling book it’s based on. When it comes to WTAF just happened endings, novelist Sarah Pinborough has it thoroughly nailed. It's no surprise the hashtag #wtfthatending started trending on Twitter shortly after it was published.
Released in 2017, the electrifying page-turner follows Louise, a single mother who works in a psychiatrist's office and starts having an affair with her new boss, David. But things take a sinister turn when she strikes up a friendship with David's wife without him knowing. But how does the TV series match up to the book? Here are the biggest differences between the two.
We don’t find out how Adele got her black eye until the very end of the book when the twist is revealed, but in the TV show we know it’s because she got it while trying to buy drugs.
In the book there’s a lot of incredibly dark details about Adele killing their cat and blaming the death on David. She also kills the cat of the woman David met in Brighton, cafe owner Marianne, by poisoning it.
Louise’s best friend Sophie gets more of a backstory in the book, and we learn she’s been cheating on her music exec husband, but in the show she appears just a handful of times. We eventually find out how Louise managed to cut ties with Sophie after marrying David, revealing she told her husband that she had been cheating on him.
Adele drops so many breadcrumbs about soon ‘being dead’ and not having the same body for much longer in the book. After Dr Sykes calls her to ask about the bruise on her eye, she says: “It’s so easy to sow these seeds in people. None of us really knows each other after all.”
Adele’s pregnancy is talked about a lot in the book, but it is barely mentioned in the TV show.
Staying true to the book, the twist is exactly the same. The show ends with Adele (or, er, Rob in Louise’s body) and David driving off to start their new life together along with Louise’s son Adam who is sat in the back of the car. Though the book does go one further, and Rob (in Louise’s body) hints she’s going to kill Adam, saying he’ll have an ‘accident’.
In the book, we get a better picture of David and Adele’s early childhood friendship and how they first met when she was eight. We also learn that's when he gave her a book about dreams which helped spark her ability for astral projection. We also hear a lot more about her parents disapproving of David because he was from “bad stock” and that his dad was in debt.
