A North Belfast girl has cut and donated her hair to a children's charity, 'melting her family's hearts'.

Last week, seven-year-old Amari McCaul donated 20 inches of her hair to The Little Princess Trust which provides free real hair wigs to children and young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Amari's mum Christine, who is "extremely proud", said the Cliftonville Integrated Primary School pupil made the decision herself that she wanted to help others and will continue to do so.

She has also raised £525 for the charity, which funds childhood cancer research "searching to find kinder and more effective treatments".

Christine said: "[Amari decided to do it as she [has] such a caring heart and watched a YouTube video of children who lose their hair due to cancer and it broke her heart that they were her age, and this year she was making her Communion and was getting her hair done.

"[She said she] would grow her hair and after her Communion. She wanted to donate it.

"She searched internet until she found The Little Princess Trust took hair donations. She got me to contact them and set up a Go Fund Me page... she raised £525.

"I am extremely proud that she done this for [an] amazing charity, with her heart and no one asking her or telling her to do it.

"It showed so much of her good thoughtful nature."

Caroline added: "After it being cut her first response was, 'Right, I have to grow my hair and do this again. As my hair grows back, it's helping [another] child to get hair to help with their confidence'.

"She will continue to do this to give children her hair [were] her words after [it was] cut, which melted our hearts...

"We are so proud of her, we are so ecstatic."

To date, The Little Princess Trust has provided over 15,000 wigs to children and young people with hair loss.
