Justice League's Ben Affleck has categorically ruled out directing inside the DC Universe.

An actor first and foremost – he's played our most grizzled Batman yet across six movies, including this year's The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – Affleck is also a keen filmmaker, having called the shots on The Town and Live By Night.

Yet despite James Gunn's game-changing introduction as the co-steward of DC's stable of superheroes, this won't tempt the A-lister into revisiting that realm.

"I would not direct something for the Gunn DC. Absolutely not," Affleck told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I have nothing against James Gunn. Nice guy, sure he's going to do a great job. I just wouldn't want to go in and direct in the way they're doing that. I'm not interested in that."

It's hard not to connect his indifference with the residual damage of Justice League.

He went on to comment: "Justice League ... You could teach a seminar on all the reasons why this is how not to do it. Ranging from production to bad decisions to horrible personal tragedy, and just ending with the most monstrous taste in my mouth."

This comes after Affleck revealed that his friend and regular collaborator Matt Damon helped him figure some things out post-Justice League.

"I had a really nadir experience around Justice League for a lot of different reasons. Not blaming anybody, there's a lot of things that happened. But really what it was is that I wasn't happy. I didn't like being there," he said last year.

"I didn't think it was interesting. And then some really sh**ty things, awful things happened. But, that's when I was like: 'I'm not going to do that anymore.' In fact, I talked to [Matt] about it and [he] was a principal influence on that decision. I want to do the things that would bring me joy."

Zack Snyder's Justice League is out now on HBO Max in the US, and Sky Cinema and NOW in the UK.
