Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife have welcomed a new baby boy into the world.

The Mail Online reports that the Sherlock actor's wife, Sophie Hunter, gave birth to the couple's second son in London on March 3.

The boy has apparently been named Hal Auden Cumberbatch, with Hal being the nickname given to Henry V in William Shakespeare's play of the same title.

The couple's chosen middle name, Auden, is almost certainly a reference to the poet WH Auden, who wrote Funeral Blues and The Age of Anxiety.

A spokesperson for the couple has not yet responded to a request for confirmation of the news.

The new baby will be a brother to the couple's first son Christopher Carlton, who was born in June 2015.

Benedict and his wife Sophie, who is a theatre director, started dating in 2014 and married on Valentine's Day in 2015.

They first met in 2009 when they co-starred in Burlesque Fairytales.

The new arrival is bound to keep Cumberbatch even busier than he already is. He's signed up to play a centuries-old history teacher in the film adaptation of How to Stop Time.

It's based on the soon-to-be-released novel by Matt Haig and will also be executive-produced by Cumberbatch.

He has also just signed up to play aristocratic playboy Patrick Melrose in the Sky Atlantic and Showtime series Melrose.

It'll be based on The Patrick Melrose Novels by Edward St Aubyn and sees the actor take on a role he's been after for ages.
