Bernardo Silva was among the Manchester City players trying to stop a pitch invasion in the closing seconds of the side’s title-winning victory against West Ham United.

City will lift the Premier League trophy for the fourth year in a row after a 3-1 win over the Hammers at the Etihad Stadium. A Phil Foden double had given Pep Guardiola’s side a 2-0 lead in the first half, but there was some jeopardy after Mohamed Kudus’s overhead kick.

But the celebrations really began when Rodri restored City’s two-goal lead just before the hour mark. That is how the score stayed, meaning that there was no looks towards events at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners over Everton.

Going into added time, the excitement for the full-time whistle built around the stadium. Despite the presence of several stewards, some supporters started to make their way onto the edge of the pitch in anticipation.

It caused the game to be momentarily stopped while the fans were ushered back. And that prompted an angry response from Silva and some of his teammates.

The midfielder approached one section of fans, shouting and gesturing at them to move back and not invade the pitch. The game continued for another few seconds before the full-time whistle.

That prompted a full-pitch invasion with the players running towards the tunnel. Those few minutes were met with criticism from Sky Sports pundit and co-commentator Gary Neville.

“What are they doing? Honestly,” he said. “They are even getting booed by their own fans.

“To be fair Bernardo Silva is going over to them, he is furious. He's absolutely right, It's not your first title.

“All the City fans are over toward them saying 'get back in the stands'. They are not kids either, by the way, forty-odd year-old blokes.”

After the full-time whistle he added: “What a shame those players can't celebrate out on the pitch in front of all the fans in this stadium because some, well quite a lot, have decided to run on and fill the pitch themselves. I am not quite sure it is going down well in the rest of the stadium but what an amazing achievement from City's players and coach.”
