Beryl Damages Homes, Causes Power Outages in Galveston

The coastal city of Galveston, Texas, was hit by strong winds, torrential rain, and flooding as Storm Beryl came ashore on Monday morning, July 8.

City officials urged people to stay home until further notice, and said streetlights, transformers and power lines had been damaged or downed in the storm, leaving “substantial debris in the roadways.”

Local power supplier CenterPoint Energy was responding to “widespread power outages across the island,” officials added.

CenterPoint Energy said the storm severed power to more than 2.1 million customers across the greater Houston area, which includes Galveston.
