As thousands of voters across East Lancashire - and millions around the UK - go to the polls today, many have been joined by their furry friends.

The #dogsatpollingstations hashtag has become a permanent fixture of election days, with many pooches tagging along with their owners as they cast their votes in the General Election.

People are voting in six constituencies around East Lancashire, and they have not let us down with contributions to the dogs at polling stations trend.

Here we have rounded up some of the best posts we've seen on X of very good boys and girls outside polling stations across the region.

James Bowmer, a teacher at Ribblesdale School in Clitheroe, shared a photo of his pet pooch Gus at his polling station in the Clitheroe area.

He cutely captioned the post "Gus forgot his photo ID!"

Another post from around Clitheroe came from Adrian Worsley, who shared a cute picture of his spaniel Gavin.

Adrian said: "Gavin helping me exercise my democratic right."

A third entry came from Clitheroe of another dog out to vote.

The voter, who goes by the username teambolshyjane on X, shared a snap of her dog Maximus looking eager for her to cast a ballot.

She said: "Maximus took a windy walk in downtown Clitheroe to encourage us to vote!"

Claire Thompson shared a photo of her adorable Jack Russell called Paddy outside the polling stations at Chatburn Methodist Church.

She didn't caption the photo, but coincidentally in the photo there was a warning to dog owners about cleaning up dog mess.

We're sure Claire and Paddy are always responsible when out for walks.

Back in Clitheroe, Penelope Pendragon shared a photo of Steve Rostron with his dog Boo Radley at their polling station.

Over in Burnley, Mike Holden shared his "obligatory" photo.

Also in Burnley, Mark Longrigg told his pooch Bob to "grin and bear it" as they went to vote.

There have been more than 22,000 tweets posted on X with the dogs at polling stations hashtag, and as people continue to vote into the evening many more are likely to appear.

Polls close at 10pm, after which counting will get underway. You will be able to follow all the updates from across East Lancashire in our live blog which will get underway this evening.

If you have not voted yet, there is still time to cast your ballot at your local polling station. Remember to take a valid form of photo ID with you to be able to cast a vote.
