Llandudno, often hailed as North Wales' top holiday spot, has come under fire for its litter problem. Visitor Penny Colegate was appalled by the rubbish cluttering the streets and pavements, pointing out the negative impact on the town's beauty and tourist appeal.

The retiree on a memory-lane trip to her native North Wales was horrified by what she found in Llandudno. Having once worked in the Conwy resort she was shocked by just how scruffy the place looked.

On her return to Hampshire, where she now lives, Penny Colegate, 68, wrote of her disgust at seeing Llandudno "swimming in litter". Cans, bottles and takeaway wrappers covered pavements and were piled up under street furniture, she said. Her observations have sparked a conversation among both tourists and residents.

One such reader ALARICUS said: "I love to visit Llandudno. I don't walk around looking at the ground for litter so I don't notice any. I look upwards, breathing in the bracing sea air on the Prom or Great Orme. Saddest of all is the change in the Grand Hotel from when I knew it in the '50/60's."

While Degten10 commented: "Would help if Joe Public could be able to put their rubbish in the bin, or take it home." Flash74 said: "'There's no excuse for littering' says the council whose operatives routinely drop paper and plastics while emptying recycling bins, and stand looking at the mess before getting on the wagon and driving off."

Lucy1967 added: "Well…. Sadly the council doesn’t spend money on important things like that anymore, our own rubbish is only collected monthly so it’s not the healthiest for us locals either, now there is a very big building owned by the council which cost a lot of money, it’s hardly used anymore as people are still working from home, perhaps it’s them you should have contacted."

Llanpeter commented: "I'm sick and tired of people writing stuff on newspaper and other social media sites rubbishing places they used to live, not having a good word to say; and then disappearing back to their gilded homes in the south of England or abroad."

PeterLewis said: "Llandudno is no dirtier than your average holiday seaside resort. Anywhere that attracts large numbers of incoming visitors, over the year, is bound to have a problem with discarded litter. Saying that though, i was walking over the Great Orme the other day, from Haulfre Gardens, towards the Halfway tram station and towards St Tudno's church. I didn't see any discarded litter, so how someone can claim Llandudno is a dirty town, its just a personal experience. I've lived here for nearly twenty fives years, and fair play, the Council do make a concerted attempt at clearing the litter."

Jennni added: "I'm part of the Friends of Happy Valley group, some of whom litter pick there every week, we do our best on our small but beautiful area!"

Jonesey1 replied: "And you do an excellent job, I’m sure. Last time I was down there Happy Valley looked very spik-and-span. Shame about the floral LLANDUDNO sign not being floral any more….or has it been planted-up this year?"

Johnp11 said: "Council tax has gone up as central funding of councils has gone down drastically. Council costs on social care and special needs have gone through the roof. Personally I think the UK will be a case study for future uni students etc about why cutting essential public services costs more in the long term."

Traveller124 said: "I've been twice last week and can't say I noticed that much litter. Some of the bins were getting full though.

"It could have been worse. Rhyl was the worst place I've been for a long while. What was noticeable everywhere was the number of public toilets closed, locked up or out of use. Surely the councils can afford to keep these essential facilities open for all as a bare minimum? Or are you expected to have to use cafes etc?"
