After a dismal few months on the weather front, we’ve finally enjoyed our first dose of sunshine.

It may have taken until the latter half of June, but the blue skies and warmer temperatures have finally appeared, prompting many of us to pitch up in beer gardens to watch the Euros, or avoid the tournament all together and opt for an al fresco dinner.

And we’ve had some new places to visit and soak up the sun this past month too. There’s the new Irish bar, Mother Mary’s, which has taken up residence in the former Font site near Oxford Road; a new neighbourhood cafe in Salford from the team behind The Black Friar; and hit pasta spot Onda’s first permanent site looking out onto Circle Square.

And, as the weather heats up, so too does Manchester’s host of hospitality openings. This summer, we’ll get the chance to dine at a brand new tapas spot in a Stockport neighbourhood, enjoy massive sandwiches courtesy of two new delis, and dine out at the city’s newest steak spot, Flat Iron.

Affordable London steakhouse chain Flat Iron lands on Deansgate this month. Opening on July 3 within the former premises of the Royal London Friendly Society - a Grade II-listed building first opened in 1908.

The chain is known for its signature ‘Flat Iron’ steak, taken from the often overlooked featherblade, and comes in at £14. It also serves burgers for around £13, a special Scottish ribeye cut exclusive to Manchester, as well as sides including beef dripping chips, creamed spinach, truffled macaroni cheese and crispy bone marrow garlic mash.

As well as its bespoke charcoal grill, which will be used for all beef specials, the restaurant will be offering a selection of wines to complement the steaks. This will include Flat Iron’s very own Malbec, specially blended using grapes grown in the Limoux area of the Languedoc in southern France.

Flat Iron will open in Manchester on July 3, 2024. Flat Iron Manchester, 200 Deansgate, Manchester.

Dos Hermanos Tapas and Bar - Cheadle Hulme

Stockport’s burgeoning food and drink scene has been well documented, but away from the town centre, there’s some new places worth checking out too. Bringing a serving of Spanish sunshine to leafy Cheadle Hulme, Dos Hermanos, or ‘two brothers’, will be opening in the former Butterworth’s Bakery on Mellor Road.

Dishing out Spanish small plates, beers, wines and sangria, the new neighbourhood tapas bar is a labour of love from two lifelong friends with a vision to bring a near-derelict building back from the brink. Along with Waterhouse’s Quality Food - a staple of the village since 1921 - and newer neighbours MyHQ, the Chiverton Tap and Archive Bar, this new food spot hopes to bring even more community spirit into the village.

Last month, Companio Bakery, a much-loved addition to Manchester's artisanal baking scene, confirmed it would be opening a larger cafe space this summer. The Radium Street bakery, which sells a range of breads, viennoiserie and sweet bakes, will be expanding into the Northern Quarter.

While the original Ancoats site will remain, the new Northern Quarter spot will expand on the strong reputation the bakery has built, and will feature an indoor seating area. Companio's croissants have become some of the most coveted baked goods in Manchester and while the specific location has not yet been revealed, there’s been plenty of buzz from the bakery’s loyal customers.

Oseyo - Manchester Arndale

The UK’s largest Korean and Asian supermarket group has now confirmed it will open this July inside Manchester’s Arndale Centre. It has been 12 months since the largest Asian retailer confirmed plans to open in the city.

Meaning 'welcome' in Korean, the retailer will be providing a wide variety of groceries and products, from snacks and sauces to fresh produce and authentic ingredients - from noodles and dumplings, to dried foods, Korean rice wine and non-alcoholic beverages, plus fresh groceries and non-grocery products.

Catering to both the Korean community and those eager to explore new culinary experiences, they will be bringing some exciting produce from some of Korea’s biggest food brands, as well as toys, stationary, homeware and electronics.

A popular Italian sandwich shop famed for its giant focaccia has this week revealed plans to expand. Ad Maiora, which started out from a small flat a couple of years ago, has confirmed it will be opening a brand new deli in the city centre.

The brainchild of Sardinian couple Daniela Steri and Enrico Pinna who started their business out of their flat in Manchester's Northern Quarter, their Italian sandwiches have quickly amassed a huge following of bread lovers across the city who can’t get enough of their giant butties.

The sandwich shop, which has served up delights for Manchester City players Mateo Kovacic and Erling Haaland, shared its ‘next step’ with followers earlier this week, announcing news of an ‘authentic’ Italian deli shop coming to Manchester. A precise location has not yet been confirmed.

Tucked away on an Ancoats courtyard, Ancoats Deli will open this July. Tipped to be a welcome addition to the area's popular food and drink scene, the new deli and hidden suntrap will serve up a range of sandwiches, as well as coffee, cheese, charcuterie, and small selection of cocktails.

The deli will be stocked full of essentials - from eggs and milk to dinner ingredients - and will also have bottles of wine to take away, and there will also be a lunchtime deal and sharing boards. Manchester bakery and neighbour, Companio, will provide fresh baked bread for the sandwiches, including the classic Jambon Beurre, Reuben with pastrami, and an Egg Sandwich of soft boiled eggs, jammy yolks, Dijonnaise and watercress.

Manchester Central will soon be home to Junction, a new bar, restaurant, café and social workspace. Serving up coffees, cocktails and 'locally sourced' small plates, the new dining spot will open its doors in July.

Junction's entrance will be situated on the podium steps leading up to Manchester Central, with a second internal entrance for delegates visiting events. Headed up by acclaimed Manchester chef Liam Rayner, formerly of The Lowry Theatre, it will cater for coffees, breakfast and lunches during the day, with the venue transforming into an intimate warm atmosphere for dinner, small plates and post-work drinks and cocktails.
