Bill Bailey throws his hat in the ring for Eurovision 2022

He was the surprise winner of Strictly Come Dancing 2020, and now Bill Bailey has offered to try to recreate his unexpected success at Eurovision.

After a low point at the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night when the UK finished in last place as the only country with the dreaded nil points, comedian Bailey has offered to rescue our Eurovision reputation in 2022.

The day after our embarrassment at the 2021 contest, he tweeted: "I’d be happy to throw my hat in the ring for #Eurovision 2022"

Bailey's Strictly partner Oti Mabuse commented: "Can I dress as a hand?"

Fellow comedian Jack Whitehall also encouraged his Eurovision bid, replying: "Please make this happen."

Billy Bragg even offered to join forces as a duo, posting a link to his and Bailey's comedy song Unisex Chipshop and writing: "I’m rested and ready."

London mayor Sadiq Khan also threw his support behind Bailey, telling him: "Got my vote."

Bailey's fans agreed it was a genius suggestion, with one person tweeting: "Bill I would 100% support this, I have loved pretty much everything you have done, comedy, TV, even strictly and in the event of Nil Points I’m sure it would be one of the most entertaining post match interviews of Eurovision! #billforeurovision"

Someone else added: "We would win by a mile. Who doesn’t love Bill Bailey."

UK act James Newman's effort Embers was the lowest scoring entry in this year's contest, which took place in Rotterdam and was won by Italian band Maneskin.

Newman received zero points in both the judges and public votes, while Italy overtook jury choice Switzerland to seize victory with the public vote.

Bailey might have a fight on his hands for the 2022 entry as Katie Price has also expressed interest in singing for her country.

Price, 43, was hopeful of being chosen to represent the UK in 2005, but we ended up going with Javine Hylton instead.

As she watched Saturday's contest, Price said: "That's actually funny. I reckon they should put me up to do Eurovision in a black catsuit this time. I'd smash it."
