Bill Burr Special Lands At Hulu As Streamer Ramps Up Stand-Up Comedy Push

EXCLUSIVE: Earlier this year, Hulu revealed that it was making a big push into stand-up comedy, taking on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The Disney-backed streamer has now signed up another big name to its roster – Bill Burr.

Burr’s next comedy special, which was taped in June at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, will air on Hulu as part of the Hulu’s Laughing Now banner.

He joins Jim Gaffigan, whose special The Skinny, will kick off the push on November 22. The plan is to have 12 specials across the year with one launching each month.

Deadline understands that Hulu is also in talks with other big names and is close to other deals.

Hulu’s move comes after Netflix somewhat cornered the stand-up comedy market, paying big money to launch specials from the likes of Chris Rock, Hannah Gadsby, Pete Davidson, Katt Williams as well as its most recent special, Hannah Berner: We Ride At Dawn. It also launched The Roast of Tom Brady, which aired during the Netflix is a Joke festival, and recently announced an upcoming special from controversial podcaster Joe Rogan.

Others such as Amazon have also been active in the space with the Jeff Bezos-run company launching specials from the likes of Marlon Wayans, and Sam Morrill, whose You’ve Changed special launched earlier this week. Max recently launched specials from the likes of Hannah Einbinder and Ramy Youssef, while Peacock got in the game with specials such as Chris Fleming: Hell.

Burr’s move to Hulu is significant as he has previously released a number of specials on rival Netflix including Live At Red Rocks, Paper Tiger, Walk Your Way Out and I’m Sorry You Feel That Way.

He has spent this year touring his Bill Burr Live show, having become the first comedian to perform at the 5,000-seat ancient Roman amphitheater, The Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens last year and the first comedian to perform at Fenway Park with his show in 2022.

Burr has also starred in Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix film Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, his film Old Dads launched on Netflix last October and has appeared in Leo alongside Adam Sandler and The King of Staten Island alongside Pete Davidson. TV roles have included The Mandalorian and Reservation Dogs.
