Billie Eilish confirms she recently came out publicly: 'Wasn't it obvious?'

"I didn't realize people didn't know."

Billie Eilish is for the girls — but she thought you already knew that.

This weekend, the “Happier Than Ever” singer addressed her November interview with Variety, in which she came out publicly after discussing her attraction to women. Eilish had no intention of doing it in the cover story, but only because she didn’t know she had to.

"I kind of thought, 'Wasn't it obvious?'" she said while walking the red carpet at the publication's annual Hitmakers event on Saturday. "I didn't realize people didn't know."

While speaking with the outlet for last month’s The Power of Women issue, Eilish sparked speculation about her sexuality after opening up about her relationship with women. “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well," she said at the time. "I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”

Now, on the subject of coming out, she says, “I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, 'Why can’t we just exist?' I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”

As for her reaction to the story, Eilish said her first thought was, "Oh, I guess I came out today. Okay, cool."

She added, "It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls.”

In the past, Eilish, who was most recently romantically linked to the Neighbourhood frontman Jesse Rutherford, has clapped back at speculation regarding her sexuality. The singer was accused of “queerbaiting” after the release of her 2021 music video for “Lost Cause,” which features her and several girls flirting at a slumber party. She responded on Instagram with screenshots from the shoot and a caption that simply read, “I love girls.”

Earlier this year, while speaking to Elle about the relentless scrutiny she faces for her clothes and personal life, she added, "Or my sexuality! Like, oh yeah, that’s everyone else’s business, right? No. Where’s that energy with men?"
