Billie Piper has described her marriage to Chris Evans as “reckless” and admitted they “got hammered for three years.”

The 38-year-old Secret Diary of a Call Girl star marred TV presenter and DJ Chris Evans, 54, when she was just 18 and he was 35 in a secret ceremony in Las Vegas in May 2001, after six months of dating.

Piper opened up about the whirlwind romance to former Doctor Who co-star David Tennant in his new podcast, and insisted she learned a lot from the relationship.

Tennant asked her, "You had this whirlwind marriage to Chris Evans who was, and is, a famous television and radio personality. The two of you sort of dropped out of life, didn't you?”

Piper replied: "We had a really amazing time together, you know? I imagine it's what your uni years feel like. Sort of reckless, but you're learning a lot.

“It was an incredible time and not to undermine our relationship because we also had a very loving relationship. It wasn't just, oh we're getting, going out, getting f*****d. We had a very caring, loving relationship."

And the I Hate Suzie star - who rose to fame aged 15 with debut Number 1 singer Because We Want To in 1998 - claimed marrying Evans was the ultimate rebellion against being a teen popstar.

She told David Tennant Does a Podcast With…: "I would say I was in a dark place and just ready to have a bit of a normal life, whatever that meant for me. I was just so tired.

"If I'm honest, I was really burnt out. I also wanted to have some freedom. I wanted to stay at home and learn how to cook properly and do what felt like healing things."

Piper also revealed that she lived alone from the age of 14, which now worries about looking back on.

She said: “I had my own flat at 14-years old! I was getting home after an 18 hour day, cooking m y own food - beans on toast and milk ‘cause I was a child! And then getting up at 5am and going to work.

“Very weird. Very weird on reflection, and I am scared for my younger self. But at the time amazing!”

The Eternal Beauty actress and Evans split in 2004 and divorced in 2007 and have remained friends.

Evans - who was also previously married to Loose Women presenter Carol McGiffin - married professional golfer Natasha Shishmanian in 2007. They have four children together - sons Noah, 11, Eli, eight, and two-year-old fraternal twins Walt and Boo.

Evans also has a 34-year-old daughter Jade from a previous relationship.
