Fed-up passengers slammed Birmingham Airport as a "disgrace" and "beyond awful" this morning after reportedly queuing for more than two hours to get through security. Some claimed they had missed, or nearly missed, their flights due to long waiting times.

Passenger David Gee, who claimed he missed his flight due to "wild" queues, blasted BHX as a "hot mess". He said the airport would not be getting "business" from him in the future.

A worried mum claimed her daughter nearly missed her flight today after queuing for "three hours". She wrote on X: "Had a message off daughter and her friend - not seasoned travellers, already anxious, saying they only just made their flight after queuing for three hours.

"What an absolute disgrace." A third passenger, Helen, claimed she waited in a queue for two hours before managing to get through security.

"The queue for security is beyond awful and really badly managed this morning," she added. Agreeing, passenger Kookie Salt said at 7am today: "We’ve been in the queue for two hours and we aren’t in the lift."

Airport bosses previously told BirminghamLive that long queues were forming because of ongoing construction works inside the building. New scanners will eventually allow passengers to carry two litres in hand luggage - but last minute government rules means holidaymakers are still confined to just 100ml bottles.

The airport promised 100 new staff members would be in place at the airport by June 14 to deal with the fall-out over the sudden UK liquid rule change. Top boss Nick Barton said they had hired specialist 'liquids consultants' to help passengers get their bags ready for the security hall.

BHX released a statement today after passengers described another 'chaotic' morning at the airport. A spokesperson told us: "Since June 9, we have used an outdoor temporary facility to help customers with liquid checks before they get to security.

"This week will see a larger temporary facility installed to further support the Government’s 100ml container directive. As always, our advice is only arrive when your airline’s check in opens and ensure containers of liquids, pastes and gels are under 100ml.”
