Birmingham City complete third signing in major blow to League One promotion rivals

Birmingham City have completed the signing of striker Alfie May from Charlton Athletic. May has signed a three-year contract to become Blues’ third summer signing after deals for goalkeepers Ryan Allsop and Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The 30-year-old won the Golden Boot in League One last season after netting 23 goals for Charlton Athletic. May scored 27 times in 50 appearances in all competitions during his single season with the Addicks.

For much of this summer it looked as though May would be reunited with his former Cheltenham Town manager Michael Duff at Huddersfield Town, but Blues gazumped the Terriers over the weekend.

Charlton are reluctant sellers but with May heading into the final year of his contract they have taken Blues’ money. The fee for May is believed to be in the region of £750,000.

May has scored 20 goals in three consecutive League One seasons. Before joining Charlton last summer, May twice completed that feat with Cheltenham.

May played in non-league until he was 24 when Doncaster Rovers took a punt on him. He initially struggled to find the net regularly in the EFL but May has found his way to Blues after a goal-laden three years in the third tier.
