Birmingham Selly Oak general election results 2024

Birmingham Selly Oak has been won by Labour again - although it has a new MP - as the results for the area were announced in the UK General Election. Alistair Carns secured 17,371 votes in the safe seat - winning with 45% of the vote.

Conservative candidate Simon Phipps came second with 5,834 votes, leaving Labour with a 11,537 majority. This is Alistair Carns' first foray into politics having spent the majority of his career serving in the military as a Royal Marine - he was awarded the Military Cross for his service in Afghanistan and only left the forces weeks before the election.

Selly Oak, which is home to thousands of students from the nearby University of Birmingham, has been represented by Labour since 1992. The leafy constituency encompases the town of Selly Oak as well as Bournville, Cotteridge, Stirchley and Brandwood.

Turnout: 50.4%.

Who won Selly Oak in 2019?

Selly Oak was held by Labour candidate Steve McCabe in 2019. McCabe won the vote with 27,714 votes - beating the Tory candidate who came second with 15,300 votes.

In May 2024, the 68-year-old revealed he has made the "difficult decision" to stand down from his position to "make way for someone new". He had represented Hall Green from 1997 to 2010 and Selly Oak since 2010.
