Black Mirror renewed for season 7 at Netflix

Netflix has renewed the dystopian sci-fi satire Black Mirror for another outing.

According to Deadline, the series — which aired its sixth season in June — has officially been renewed for season seven.

The Charlie Brooker-created anthology series explores the benefits and (more often) drawbacks of human nature combined with advanced technology. Each episode, while contained, is set in the same universe — with cross-episode references aplenty.

Black Mirror debuted in 2011 on Channel 4, running for two seasons and a special. It then transferred to Netflix, where it has so far aired a further four seasons and an interactive film, Bandersnatch.

The most recent season featured Schitt's Creek star Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek, Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, Zazie Beetz, Kate Mara and more.

Black Mirror season five featured Miley Cyrus, Captain America: Brave New World's Anthony Mackie and All of Us Strangers star Andrew Scott. Other Black Mirror alumni include Daniel Kaluuya, Rupert Everett, Jodie Whittaker, Hayley Atwell, Jon Hamm and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Not only is the series getting a seventh season, but Brooker has also previously teased an animated series and a musical episode set in the Black Mirror universe.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the time, Brooker said that he's "never done an animated episode or a musical episode" but "all bets are off" for the future.

"Actually, weirdly, 'USS Callister' started life — because I was thinking of a story to do with a musical, and it somehow became 'USS Callister'. So sometimes you're aiming for one thing, and you veer off somewhere else.

"Again, all bets are off, because, again, in [season six], we've got some that are almost old-school horror, and we've got some that are retro-futuristic, and we've got ones that are out-and-out comedy. So it's a right mix. So I don't know. Anything. Bloody anything!"

Seasons 1-6 of Black Mirror are available to stream on Netflix.
