The tunnel connecting Greenwich and Tower Hamlets is to partially shut this weekend as part of the Silvertown Tunnel project. Blackwall Tunnel will be closed to southbound traffic from 12:01am on Saturday, July 6, to 5am on Monday, July 8.

This is to allow for work on a new road layout on the A102. The northbound lane will be kept open but at times there may be diversions on the approach, or northbound traffic may be diverted through the southbound tunnel.

Closures will happen again on Saturday, August 17, through to Monday, August 19.

The work is due to the ongoing development of the Silvertown Tunnel. Set to open in 2025, the tolled tunnel system will connect Silvertown to the Greenwich Peninsula.

It is hoped the additional tunnel will reduce congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel and allow for better public transport links, including more cross-river bus journeys.

Drivers are encouraged to plan accordingly this weekend as TfL expect roads and alternative river crossings in east and central London to be extremely busy. There will likely be queues along the A13 westbound between Canning Town and Whitechapel and on the approaches to Rotherhithe Tunnel.

The 108 bus will operate a split service from Stratford International- Canning Town and North Greenwich- Lewisham. Passengers wanting to cross the river will need to use Tube and rail services. Auto refunds will be in place for 108 customers who use the Jubilee line between North Greenwich and Canning Town. Normal service will resume at 5am on Monday.

The Woolwich Ferry will operate as normal during these closures.
