Blizzard Causes Total Whiteout on California Freeway

Highway officials shut down Interstate 80 in California as blowing snow obscured visibility on the road on Friday, March 1.

Footage shows total whiteout conditions on I-80 in Placer County at 5pm on Friday. The interstate was closed due to “spin outs, high winds, and low visibility,” the CHP said, and eastbound traffic was being turned around at Drum Forebay.

There was no estimated time of reopening the freeway as of Friday night, according to the highway patrol.

The National Weather Service said a blizzard warning would remain in effect for the area until Sunday, with up to 12 feet of total snow accumulation expected in parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Credit: CHP Truckee via Storyful
