Blundering Boris Johnson thanks student, 18, for voting for him in 2019 election

Blundering Boris Johnson has written to an 18-year-old student - to thank him for voting for him in the 2019 general election. The former prime minister has written the letter - delivered by Royal Mail - to urge voters to back Staffordshire Moorlands Tory candidate Karen Bradley in Thursday's poll.

But the student was only 14 years old at the time of the 2019 general election - and therefore too young to vote.

In the letter - personally signed by Boris - he praises Ms Bradley for supporting the farming community, fighting for the reopening of the Leek-Stoke railway line, and securing Levelling Up cash for Leek.

Boris wrote: "Five years ago you voted for me to get Brexit done and get on with the country's priorities - and that's exactly what we did. We got Brexit done. We recruited 20,000 more police. We agreed new trade deals and invested billions into the NHS.

"Now I know a lot of things have changed since then. We were hit with a pandemic and then the price hikes caused by Putin's illegal and immoral war in Ukraine. I know the country has faced tough times and families have struggled.

"But the power of your vote has not changed. And on 4 July you will choose between Karen Bradley's strong record of delivery of Sir Keir Starmer's candidate who is a Stoke-on-Trent city councillor.

"So I'm writing to you because I want you to think carefully about who you want to be your local MP in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Only two candidates can win - Karen Bradley or Sir Keir Starmer's candidate. And whether we like it or nor every vote for the Reform Party will make a Labour win more likely."

Tony Stoddart has also received the same letter - and is not impressed.

He said: "We would never have voted for Brexit and remain embarrassed that we are citizens of a country that under Tory leadership has lurched so far towards racism and self-serving policies. This letter is an abuse of data where no filter has been used to see if we are Tory voters and did indeed vote for Brexit. If the Tories are scared of Reform then they should have done something in their manifesto to address issues that Reform appear to foster. One can only hope that the current desperation of a party so self-serving will be rewarded by a good beating on July 4."
