A dangerous driver sped at 70mph through a seaside town. Owen Wright, 23, had been spotted by police but then crashed his BMW car into a wall in Llandudno.

Caernarfon Crown Court heard he had also been stopped in a car and found to have had three illicit drugs in his body five months earlier. A judge today called him "immature" and jailed him for a total of 12 months for a string of driving offences.

Prosecutor Joshua Gorst told the court that police on patrol in Llandudno thought a silver BMW was speeding and had a broken deadlight at 10.05pm on April 11 this year. The driver sped along Maesdu Road at up to 70mph then lost control and crashed into a wall.

Prosecutor Mr Gorst also said that five months earlier Wright had sped through Llandudno's streets in a Volkswagen Polo on November 29 last year. It happened at about 4pm as schoolchildren were going home.

Officers chased and stopped his car. They carried out a drugs test and found three illicit substances in his body including cocaine and cannabis. He told police he thought their effects would have "worn off".

The court also heard Wright, of Conway (corr) Road, Llandudno Junction, had been in breach of an eight-month sentence, suspended for 18 months, imposed at Liverpool Crown Court in May last year for an earlier offence, by failing to attend an unpaid work appointment.

He also admitted failing to stop, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving with no third party insurance.

Simon Killeen, defending, said his client, whose full name is Owen Thomas Frederick Wright, was a rather immature 23-year-old. He is "not enjoying" his time on remand in custody awaiting sentence at HMP Berwyn.

The judge Her Honour Nicola Saffman jailed Wright for eight months for dangerous driving in April. He also received a two-month, consecutive sentence for the drug driving offence in November, and a further two months' imprisonment for the breach of the suspended sentence.

He was disqualified from driving for two years and six months for the dangerous driving, and banned for 12 months, to run concurrently, for the drug driving. He must pass an extended retest before he can drive again.
