Boy, 16, found dead after swimming in river in heatwave

A teenager has been found dead after going into a lake in Maidenhead to cool off amid the ongoing heatwave.

Thames Valley Police said they were called to Bray Lake in Berkshire at 11.45am on Monday morning.

A body was discovered at 1.30pm and confirmed dead at the scene.

Superintendent Michael Greenwood said: “This is an absolute tragedy in which a young boy has died after getting into difficulty in the water of Bray Lake.

“The boy’s next of kin have been notified and are being offered support at this extremely difficult and traumatic time

“My thoughts, and the thoughts of all of us at Thames Valley Police are with the boy’s family and his friends, and we would ask that their privacy is respected.”

The news comes after a body was found in the search for missing Robert Hattersley, 13, who went missing after jumping into the River Tyne near Ovingham, Northumberland, on Sunday.

Paying tribute, his family said “he brought a smile to so many people’s faces and he will be missed by absolutely everyone who knew and loved him”.

Search teams were sent out and on Monday morning Northumbria Police said the boy's body had been found following extensive searches by the force’s marine unit.

A spokesman wrote on Twitter: "Sadly, a body has since been found in the water.

"Formal ID has yet to take place, but we believe it to be the missing boy.

"This is a tragic update that we hoped we’d never have to give.

"His family are being supported by officers & our thoughts are with them at this awful time."

The boy had got into difficulty after entering the water at around 4.15pm on Sunday.

Emergency services raced to the scene and a huge search was launched including personnel from Northumberland Police, Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service, Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and Mountain Rescue.

News of the body came on Monday morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Brooks told reporters: "Our thoughts go out to the male’s family and friends at this devastating time and I would ask that their privacy is respected as they attempt to come to terms with what has happened.
