Body found in search for missing sailor Joshua Gayton who vanished from Faslane base

A body has been found following the search for a missing 21-year-old who was last seen walking alone in Helensburgh.

Joshua Gayton, 21, was reported missing after he didn't attend work at nearby Faslane Naval Base. CCTV enquiries found that Joshua was walking alone away from Helesburgh town centre at around 12.46am on Tuesday, April 16.

Police have now confirmed that the body of a man was found in water off Helensburgh yesterday evening (April 21) at around 6.20pm.

Formal identification is yet to take place however, the family of Joshua Gayton have been informed. There appears to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.20pm on Sunday, 21 April 2024, police received a report the body of a man had been found in water off Helensburgh.

“Formal identification has still to take place, however, the family of Joshua Gayton, last seen in Helensburgh on Tuesday, 16 April, 2024, has been notified.

“A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course, however, the death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
