The body of a teenager has been found in a river five weeks after he went missing following a night out.

Jacob Crompton, 19, was last seen at midnight on March 23. Locals from his hometown of Retford in Nottinghamshire launched a major search operation and his worried mother said the disappearance was "completely out of character".

As reported by the Mirror, police have now confirmed a body was found in the River Idle, close to Retford, on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said: "Specialist teams have been carrying out extensive land and water searches after Jacob Crompton was reported missing on Sunday 24 March.

"The 19-year-old had been on a night out in Retford town centre but failed to return home. Sadly, a body was found in the River Idle, north of Retford, on Saturday morning."

Whilst formal identification has yet to take place, Jacob's family has been informed of the development. Police used helicopters, an underwater search team, and a drone team in their search for the missing teenager.

Speaking at the time of his disappearance, his mother Nicola Crompton said: "It is now a full week since Jacob went missing and completely out of character for him not to return home after a night out. He is much loved by his family, friends and colleagues. He had plans for the future and was happy in life."

Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Jacob's family have been informed of this very sad development and our thoughts are with them at what I know will be an extremely difficult time.

"I would like to thank all those members of the public for sharing our appeal, and for the support and assistance they have given to our officers on the ground. Although our searches have concluded, officers are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Jacob's disappearance. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
