Bolton West general election 2024 results in full

Labour overturned the biggest Conservative majority in Greater Manchester to triumph in Bolton West. Newly elected MP Phil Brickell got the support of 17,363 voters as he snatched the seat from incumbent MP Chris Green who polled 12,418.

Loud and long cheers rang out from Labour supporters at the election count at Bolton Arena when the result was announced at around 3.30am. Mr Green had won the seat, which has since seen some boundary changes, by a margin of 8,855 at the last election in 2019 making it the most comfortable Conservative majority of the seven parliamentary seats they held before this evening in Greater Manchester.

Reform Dylan Evans came third with 8,517 votes. The constituency is not considered a typical ‘red wall’ seat where the Tories broke through for the first time in 2019, but more of a traditional marginal with both the Conservatives and Labour winning over recent decades.

The new MP, 37-year-old Phil Brickell, said: "I grew up here and my parents dedicated their working lives to the NHS in Bolton and I'm proud to have had my first job working at Bolton hospital. It was a sense of public service which motivated me to stand for parliament. A desire to put the people across this constituency first.

"I'm proud to have run a positive campaign since the day I was selected to fight for the seat. "Over the last six weeks my team and I have spoken to thousands of people in all parts of the constituency.

"Time and time again people have told me how our communities face immense challenges such as the cost of living crisis or struggling to access the NHS, rising crime and anti-social behaviour or sewage in our rivers. "Many people feel let down by the government. "I know a Labour government will make good on the promises made during this campaign."

Outgoing Conservative MP Chris Green made a gracious concession speech congratulating his opponent. He said: "This will be a tough time for the new Labour government with many challenges and I'll look forward to following the progress of Phil over the next four or five years.

"I wish him all the best in the future."
