Boris Johnson has said he doesn’t know who Naga Munchetty is and has no idea about the racism row which has engulfed the BBC.

In an interview on LBC on Tuesday, the Prime Minister was asked about the huge row involving the presenter following her formal rebuke – which has since been reversed – from BBC bosses for comments she made about his ally Donald Trump.

Asked by presenter Nick Ferrari if she breached "editorial guidelines at the BBC by calling Donald Trump a racist", Mr Johnson said: "I am so sorry, I have never heard of her."

An incredulous Mr Ferrari asked: "You have never heard of Naga Munchetty? The row over racism?"

"You're going to have to forgive me," Mr Johnson said, "I should know about Naga Munchetty."

Turning to his aides in the studio in Manchester, Mr Johnson asked: "Does anybody know about Naga Munchetty - hands up?"

The Prime Minister started laughing as his entire team but their hands up.

The row has dominated the news agenda in recent days, with BBC director-general Tony Hall reversing the rebuke on Monday night.
