Boxing world rocked by death of Cumbernauld champion described as 'true gentleman'

The Scottish boxing community has been rocked following the death of a young Cumbernauld champion.

Andrew Tham, known as Andy, died on Sunday (June 2) after he was involved in a tragic motorbike crash. The 28-year-old was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow on Thursday, May 30, after his Kawasaki motorbike collided with a car.

The incident happened on the B8039 near Lenziemill Road in Cumbernauld with officers now appealing for information as their enquiries continue.

Andy has been remembered as a "true gentlemen" who "lit up every room" - the Scottish boxing scene has been left heartbroken by the news.

Tributes have since flooded in - a post shared by Boxing Scotland reads: "Boxing Scotland is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Andrew Tham.

"Andrew represented Scotland internationally many times, competing at the World Junior Championships in Kazakhstan in 2011 as well as being a British Youth Silver medallist in 2013.

"Andrew transitioned to the professional ranks in 2019 where he became Scottish Featherweight champion.

"Our deepest condolences go to Andrew’s family and friends."

Andy remained at St Andrew's Sporting Club throughout his professional career, confirming the tragic news they said: "On behalf of the Tham family, St Andrew’s Sporting Club are devastated to confirm the tragic passing of Andy Tham.

"Andy was a champion in the ring, and a character out of the ring. It has been an honour to have him in our stable for the entirety of his professional boxing career and he will be greatly missed by us all.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. We ask that you please respect their privacy at this difficult time."

Andy lost his life less than two weeks after a Celtic Featherweight match against George Stewart.

JATV Live paid tribute to the 28-year-old, writing: "Totally heartbroken to hear that Andy Tham has sadly passed away. He lit up every room with his infectious smile and was a true gentleman and proper student of boxing.

"Thoughts are with his friends, family and everyone at Kilsyth Golden Gloves and St Andrew’s Sporting Club".

Local boxing club, Auchengeich Boxing Club wrote: "We are saddened to hear our friend ftom Kilsyth Golden Gloves Boxing Club Andrew Tham has passed away after a serious motorcycle accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy’s family and his family at his boxing club.

"Andy was a chirpy happy go lucky guy who had his own happy wee character in and out the ring and had a smile that glowed for everyone. RIP"

Police Scotland's investigation continues as they appeal to the public for further information.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder from the Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said: “Our thoughts are very much with Andrew’s family and friends at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Enquiries into the full circumstances of this crash continue. If you believe you have information that will assist our enquiries or if you have any dashcam footage, please contact 101 quoting incident number 3307 of 30 May.”
