New York State Attorney General Letitia James said her office is launching an investigation into the fatal police shooting of a 13-year-old boy who allegedly pointed a replica handgun at officers during an encounter in Utica. James's announcement came a day after hundreds of people attended a community vigil for 13-year-old Nyah Mway, who was killed Friday night. Citing New York state executive law, James said the Office of Special Investigation, which is part of her office, assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer "may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission."

The state attorney general is investigating the shooting of Nyah Mway, who was shot by Utica police after they tackled him to the ground following a foot chase on Friday. Late on Saturday, police released body camera video that showed an officer fatally shooting the boy who had been tackled to the ground after he ran from police and pointed a replica handgun at them. The teen was killed a little after 10 p.m. Friday in Utica after officers in the city about 240 miles (400 kilometers) northwest of Manhattan stopped two youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation, police said.
