A 14-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty in the River Tyne in Northumberland. Police were called to the scene just after 3.30pm on Saturday (May 18), amid concern for the welfare of two teenage boys who were in the river near the bridge at Ovingham.

A 13-year-old boy was rescued and has been taken to hospital. Police described his condition as critical.

Emergency services and members of other organisers undertook a search of the area in a bid to locate the second boy. The 14-year-old’s body was later found in the water and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
