Boy, 2, dies after being found in river

A two-year old boy has died, after being recovered from a river.

The toddler had been reported missing from a home in the Milton of Drimmie, Perthshire at around 11.15am on Sunday.

His body was found in the River Ericht at Cally Bridge near Blairgowrie, close to where he went missing, nearly an hour and a half later.

After being removed from the water by firefighters the young boy - who has not yet been identified - was treated by paramedics but could not be saved.

Police Scotland have released a statement saying: "Tragically, the boy did not survive. His family are being supported by officers at this time."

A water rescue unit and Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance also assisted in the search.

Scottish Member of Parliament for Perthshire North, John Swinney, expressed his condolences online, tweeting: "Heartbreaking news from the River Ericht at Bridge of Cally. My deepest sympathies to everyone involved."

Local councillor Liz Grant, Provost of Perth and Kinross, spoke of impact his death would have on the "very small community" and commented on the fast flowing nature of the river at this time of year.
