How “The Boys” pulled off its own human centipede in season 4

The guy behind God on "Supernatural" does something... very not-God-like on "The Boys."

Warning: This article contains spoilers from The Boys season 4, episode 2, "Life Among the Septics."

When Amazon first announced Supernatural alum Rob Benedict for a role on The Boys season 4, specifics were not given. Perhaps now we know why.

Benedict popped up on the R-rated superhero satire in the second episode of the latest eight-episode batch opposite newcomer Valorie Curry as Firecracker.

Titled "Life Among the Septics," the hour saw Butcher (Karl Urban), MM (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone), and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) tracking new supe Sister Sage (Susan Heyway) into TruthCon, a convention for the alt-right, conspiracy theory-minded community. Among stands for "Minions Are Slave Programming," "Climate Change Is a Hoax," and "Supe Lives Matter" is a panel hosted by Firecracker, a former pageant gal turned extremist supe personality.

She leads a talk called "Starlight and the Hollywood Pedophile Cabal," and Benedict plays her friend-zoned helper, Splinter, a supe with the power to create copies of himself — in a particularly gruesome fashion. But the more mentally scarring image arrives when Frenchie and Kimiko walk in on Splinter, who's secretly pining for Firecracker, furiously masturbating to her picture in the midst of a human centipede sexual situation with his naked clones.

The fact that Benedict played God on Supernatural adds to the humor of the ungodly situation.

"I was very, very open and honest with Rob," showrunner Eric Kripke tells Entertainment Weekly of casting Benedict. "I think we heard from his reps that he was interested in the part. The minute I heard, I said, 'Hold on! Let me reach out to him personally.' He's a friend, so I emailed with him. I'm like, 'Yo! Here is exactly what this character is going to have do and the insane amount of nudity and everything else. Before you even audition, I just want you to know what you're getting yourself into.'"

Benedict was completely up for it, according to Kripke. "For the record, it's not totally full frontal," he clarifies. "That is a prosthetic penis that he's wearing. So it's kind of like wearing a speedo, just with a rubber penis attached. Maybe that makes it better or worse. I don't know."

In terms of how The Boys pulled off the human centipede of it all, Kripke says, "It involves having a completely lifelike prosthetic of Rob's butt made so that Rob can be enjoying his own butt... and then you move the butt down a little and then he enjoys his own butt again... and then you move the butt down a little and he enjoys his own butt again. Then you just pop it all together with the magic of visual effects."
