Maestro's Bradley Cooper has revealed his "dramatic" first meeting with co-star Carey Mulligan – which ended with him rushing her to hospital.

Appearing with Mulligan on tonight's (January 26) edition of The Graham Norton Show to promote their Oscar-nominated film, Cooper detailed how he'd been introduced to his co-star following an unfortunate moment at one of her plays.

"Carey was in a one-woman show, and I went backstage to meet her and realised something was not right and I insisted on taking her to the emergency room," he said of the "dramatic" first introduction.

"During the show a bit of set hit me on the head," Mulligan explained.

She continued: "I carried on but when it was over, I started crying and thought I was a goner. I was sobbing on the floor when Bradley turned up and, realising I wasn't okay, he took me to hospital.

"You can imagine how delighted the nurse was!"

Directed by and starring Cooper, Maestro tells the life story of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre (played by Mulligan). Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman and Josh Hamilton also star.

The film has received a positive response from critics as well as securing seven nominations at the Oscars, including 'Best Actor' and 'Best Actress' nods for Cooper and Mulligan.

Mulligan also recalled another incident where she'd taken ill during filming – with doctors not believing she was pregnant due to the prosthetics she was wearing to play an older Felicia.

"I was quite ill on set and a doctor was called to give me antibiotics. When I told him I was 12 weeks pregnant he was not at all convinced. I then realised I was still made up to look 57 years old," she said.

"I couldn't wait to tell the make-up artists how good they were."

The Graham Norton Show airs on Friday nights at 10.50pm on BBC One, while Maestro is available to stream on Netflix.
