Aston Villa have completed the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea in a deal worth £37.5m.

The left-back has signed a six-year contract with the club after Villa found an agreement with Chelsea last week. Borussia Dortmund had the option to buy Maatsen permanently for £35m earlier in the summer, but that clause expired.

It allowed Villa to jump Dortmund in the queue to sign the 22-year-old, who is currently in Germany representing the Netherlands at Euro 2024. Maatsen made a total of 16 appearances for Chelsea before joining Dortmund on loan in January for the second half of last season.

He played 16 times in the Bundesliga and another seven in the Champions League under Edin Terzic, including in the final at Wembley. Real Madrid beat the German side 2-0 to claim the crown for the 15th time in their history.

Maatsen then jetted out to Greece for a holiday, but it was cut short after Ronald Koeman called him up to his squad for the Euros.

The defender previously spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Burnley, helping them win the Championship. He also had temporary spells at Charlton Athletic and Coventry City.

Meanwhile, Villa youngster Omari Kellyman is set to join Chelsea in a deal worth £19m.
