Brecon Beacons Lightning Strike Victim Named

One of the men who died after being struck by lightning on the Brecon Beacons mountains has been named by police.

Jeremy Prescott, from Telford, Shropshire, was one of two people killed by separate strikes on Sunday.

The 51-year-old was leading a group of young people on a Duke of Edinburgh Awards expedition in the mountain range in south Wales.

Telford and Wrekin Council, where Mr Prescott worked as a part-time youth worker, paid tribute.

"He was a very dedicated individual who gave his time to help young people in the borough achieve their full potential and was a trained Duke of Edinburgh Award support worker," a spokesman said.

"It was in this role that Jez was a team leader for a DofE expedition on the Brecon Beacons when he was fatally struck by lightning in a sudden storm at a checkpoint on the group's route.

"The council is considering appropriate ways it can pay tribute to Jez, his work and the part he has played in supporting young people in our borough."

A spokesman for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards said they were "shocked and saddened" by the news.

Police are yet to name the other victim.

The pair were taken by helicopter to the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil in a critical condition but did not pull through.

Two other people had to be taken to hospital when storms hit the peaks.
