Brenda Blethyn has expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of her former co-star Donald Sutherland, as tributes pour in for the celebrated actor following the announcement of his death on Thursday evening.

Donald Sutherland, aged 88, was mourned by his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, who shared the news on social media with a statement saying: "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

The veteran actor, known for his diverse range of roles, had worked alongside Brenda Blethyn in the 2005 film version of 'Pride and Prejudice'. The movie adaptation of Jane Austen's classic, which followed the BBC's successful series featuring Colin Firth, cast Brenda and Donald as Mr and Mrs Bennett, with Keira Knightley among their on-screen daughters.

As the TV world remembers Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, who is currently working on the final series of 'Vera', took to social media to say: "so so sad to hear of the passing of Donald Sutherland. working with him on Pride and Prejudice was a joy."

The BAFTA-winning actress's post was met with an outpouring of condolences from her followers, many of whom were hearing about Donald's passing for the first time. One fan responded: "You and Donald together was just perfection. It will always be one of my comfort films. So sad, love to you."

Another admirer expressed their sympathy, saying: "You two were wonderful in that Pride+Prejudice film. My heartfelt condolences to you and all his friends and family and fellow actors."

Brenda has been a familiar face on Teesside over the years as she filmed hit series Vera. Brenda Blethyn has quit her role as Vera Stanhope after 14 series, ITV announced earlier this year.
