Brentford injury latest ahead of Newcastle United season finale as seven players could miss out

Newcastle United are preparing for a crucial final day of the Premier League season on Sunday when they travel to injury-hit Brentford.

As the curtain closes on an electric campaign, the Magpies remain embroiled in the fight for European qualification. They sit seventh with the possibility of gaining a place or dropping a place depending on their own result and those of Chelsea and Manchester United elsewhere.

What complicates matters further is that Man United's FA Cup final result next Saturday will ultimately determine which teams qualify for the Europa League and Europa Conference League. With that said, all Eddie Howe can focus on is coaching his side to victory and hoping the rest plays out in their favour.

Newcastle themselves travel to the capital sweating over the fitness of Anthony Gordon, though are uplifted by returns for Callum Wilson, Fabian Schar and Nick Pope. Set to just miss out are Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock, whilst long-term absentees are Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett and Sandro Tonali.

And their opponents find themselves in a similar scenario waiting to make last-minute decisions over the inclusion of two players in Thomas Frank's plans. Ahead of the clash, ChronicleLive have rounded up the latest Brentford injury news...

Nathan Collins

Collins has completed the last 13 full matches for the Bees, but after the most recent of those away to Bournemouth he was handed an unspecified small fitness concern.

Frank said he would have to be assessed in the build-up to the final day of the season.

Possible return date: vs Newcastle United (May 18)

Frank Onyeka

The Nigerian midfielder has played only 20 minutes of football across Brentford's last eight league matches and was fully absent from their last matchday squad. This was down to a small, unspecified training injury picked up on Friday, May 10.

Likewise, his manager said he would have to be assessed ahead of the final day of the season.

Possible return date: vs Newcastle United (May 18)

Neal Maupay

Maupay has been absent during the last three matches, though the most recent of those was not due to injury. He missed the match at the Vitality Stadium due to the birth of his child.

The Frenchman has been seen in training footage released on the club's social media this week and is fully expected to be back in Frank's 18-man group.

Possible return date: vs Newcastle United (May 18)

Aaron Hickey

Young Scottish full-back Hickey has not featured for club or country since picking up a thigh injury in the Bees' 2-0 win at Chelsea in October 2023.

At the end of April his manager revealed he was progressing well in his recovery though did not expect the player to play a part again this season. What that means for Hickey's hopes to make the European Championships this summer remains to be seen.

Possible return date: June 2024

Ben Mee

Mee - who signed a one-year contract extension this week - suffered a fractured ankle in a 4-2 loss to West Ham United at the end of February and has not played a minute of action since. Frank confirmed one week afterwards that his central defender would be absent for the remainder of the season.

Possible return date: July 2024

Rico Henry

Newcastle fans will remember the nasty ACL injury that Henry picked up in the reverse fixture last September. That problem wiped the full-back out for the entirety of the season and his only hope since has been making it back in time for 2024/25's pre-season.

Possible return date: July 2024

Josh Dasilva

Another rewarded with a contract extension down in the capital this week, Dasilva was forced to have knee surgery back in February after picking up an injury against Tottenham Hotspur.

The treatment went well, said his manager at the time, but the problem is longer term and therefore has no hope of featuring again well into next season.

Possible return date: November 2024
