Brexit news, PMQs and politics live: Boris Johnson agrees with Labour MP that Vladimir Putin will use Russia World Cup 'like Hitler'

Boris Johnson has said he agrees that Vladimir Putin could use the Russia World Cup "like Hitler" in the 1936 Olympics.

The Foreign Secretary's comments came as he spoke at the Foreign Affairs Committee this afternoon on Russia's involvement in the Salisbury nerve agent attack.

Labour MP Ian Austin told the committee the idea of Mr Putin using the World Cup as a PR opportunity is horrifying.

Mr Johnson said he agreed with the comparison, adding: “I think the comparison with 1936 is certainly right. It is an emetic prospect to think of Putin glorifying in this sporting event.”
