Physicist Brian Cox has told how a hotel wouldn't let him check in because Brian Cox the actor was already staying there.

The pair were both on BBC Breakfast and said there had been a mix-up the night before because they share a name and were both staying at the same hotel.

"Last night was very confusing," said actor Cox.

The 76-year-old Succession star said the other Cox arrived at the hotel and explained that there were two of them with the same name.

He was then told that he had two rooms.

"And he said, 'No, no it's only one, I think there might be another Brian Cox'," said the actor.

"The hotel said to Brian, 'We can't have two Brian Coxes'."

"They wouldn't check him in, so he had to use his assistant's name!" laughed the TV star.

Scientist Cox chimed in: "I had to change my name, they couldn't do it on the computer system."

The 54-year-old even showed staff pictures of him and the actor, to prove that there were two celebs with the same name.

"They didn't believe me!" he told the breakfast show's host Charlie Stayt.

"I got a picture out on my phone and said, 'Look, this Brian Cox, he'll be coming later and then there is this one.'

"And he said, 'I know neither of you, I don't watch television'."

Viewers were tickled by the whole exchange.

"Brilliant!" one person tweeted after the show shared a clip of the conversation.

"This made me smile," said another.
