“Bridgerton”'s Luke Newton Shares Hilarious Video of Himself Scaring Costar Nicola Coughlan on Set: 'Payback'
The actress recently told PEOPLE how she also pulled off a major prank on Newton while filming season 3 of the Netflix hit
It's not all fun and games on the set of Bridgerton.
Luke Newton, who co-leads the Netflix hit series' third season, shared a post on June 3 to mark the "10 day countdown" until the second half of season 3 premieres. The post even revealed some of the tomfoolery that goes on when the actors are not yet in character.
In a hilarious video, Newton's costar and romantic interest, Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, walks into the makeup trailer with a binder in hand and her hair styled for her character when all of a sudden, her costar pops out from his hiding spot below the counter — prompting a shriek from Coughlan, 37.
She laughs and then runs out of the trailer — eliciting a scream from one of the makeup artists nearby, too — as Newton, 31, removes himself from his hiding place with a cheeky smirk on his face. "Payback!" he said as the person behind the camera laughs at the scene unfolding.
"Polin part ✌️," he captioned the post, which also featured several shots of himself and Coughlan in character as Colin Bridgerton and Penelope.

The Derry Girls star also shared a post of her own to mark the milestone as fans eagerly await the second half of the season. "10 days till part two but who's counting?" she captioned the post, which included several behind-the-scenes photos from set of her, Newton, Claudia Jessie, Simone Ashley, Luke Thompson, Jessica Madsen and others.
"I am ready. @lukenewtonuk @nicolacoughlan ❤️😍," Ashley, 29, who led season 2 alongside Jonathan Bailey, commented on Coughlan's post.
Pranks like Newton's were not a one-off on the Bridgerton set, though — and Coughlan certainly got her costar good, too.
Recalling her experience filming a dance scene for one of the balls this season, Coughlan told PEOPLE that she was "really nervous" but managed to pull off a prank that Newton deemed "amazing."
“We had a fun one in one of the balls where Luke is meant to come in and interrupt a dance,” she explained. “I had found out a few years previous that Luke used to be in a boy band, and I just thought it was the best thing ever. I had for years wanted to do this prank on him where he comes in to do a dance and instead of the music for the show playing, it would be his song from his boy band, but it took so much planning, it was insane.”
“It was so strange because I could feel it like a weird energy,” Newton told PEOPLE of the moments before the prank. “I could feel that there was like, people were looking at me over their shoulder and I was like, are people nervous about me doing this dance? Because I'm absolutely fine, we'll get through it.”
“And then all of a sudden I hear it because I had a piece in my ear first, I just had the tick, tick, tick, and I was like, it really sounds like... And then it was blasting on the speakers," Newton said.
Coughlan admitted that pulling the prank off — despite the "years" of planning — was more stressful than she could've imagined.
“I feel like I've never been more nervous on set, not even for a sex scene. I was like, if this goes wrong…”
