Feb. 28—Foundation accepting scholarship applications

BLUEFIELD — The Community Foundation of the Virginias' 2024 Scholarships Application period is now open. The application period ends at midnight on March 31.

The application for graduating high school seniors is online, and the link and information about the application process can be found on the Foundation's website, https://cfvinc.org in the Grants and Scholarships section.

High school applicants should contact their counselor for assistance.

Recipients of prior scholarships that are renewable through their years of college may receive the renewal application by request through the Foundation office by calling 304-324-0222, or emailing admin@cfvinc.org.

Last year the foundation awarded scholarships totaling $419,000 to 81 high school seniors and to 32 college students who were eligible to renew their scholarships.

The grants application period for area non-profits begins April 1, and ends the last business day of June. Information about applying for a grant can be found on the Foundation's website, https://cfvinc.org in the Grants and Scholarships section. And the Application can be downloaded from that section.

Last year the foundation awarded 80 grants totaling $479,795.69 to area non-profit organizations, and the Foundation urges area non-profits to apply for funding assistance for their projects.

Meet the Candidates coming March 22

A "Meet the Candidates" night will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, March 22 at the Mercer County 4-H Camp Dining Hall at 1823 Glenwood Park Road near Princeton.

The open to the public event is sponsored by the Mercer County Farm Bureau, a non-partisan cooperative organization for the purpose of providing information to voters of Mercer County. It will begin at 6 p.m. and candidates involving Mercer county offices and its voters are invited.

New physician welcomed to Wythe County hospital

WYTHEVILLE, Va. —Wythe County Community Hospital announced Tuesday that Neurologist Jill Cramer, M.D. has joined its medical staff to better serve the community of Wytheville and the surrounding areas.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Cramer join our medical staff," said Vicki Parks, Chief Executive Officer of Wythe County Community Hospital. "Dr. Cramer's patient-centered approach and her dedication to delivering high quality care aligns with our mission of making communities healthier."

"I see several patients from the Wythe County area in my Blacksburg location and I am excited to now have an office right here in Wytheville," Cramer said. "This practice allows me to offer patients easier access to neurological care closer to their home."

Dr. Cramer received her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and completed her residency at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO.

As a neurologist, Dr. Cramer specializes in multiple sclerosis, tremors, neuropathy, Parkinson's disease, general neurology, stroke management, neurological diseases, and dementia.

Dr. Cramer is accepting new patients and appointments may be made by calling 276-223-1703. The practice located at 340 Virginia Avenue, Wytheville, Va.

Pothole patching continues across the state

Gov. Jim Justice and the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) continue to take advantage of unseasonably warm weather to get a head start on the spring pothole patching season.

Since Justice and the WVDOH announced Operation R.I.P. Potholes on Tuesday, January 30, road crews have patched 24,551 potholes along 3,860 miles of road. That's far enough to go from Charleston to Europe, and covers most of Spain and half of France, the governor's office said Tuesday.

As crews are out patching, they are finding that some stretches of road may have numerous potholes to patch, while some stretches may have none.

Asphalt plants in St. Albans, Princeton, and Morgantown remain open the week of Monday, February 26, 2024, allowing the WVDOH to make permanent pothole repairs with hot asphalt.

Roads scheduled to be milled and filled on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, include:

Concord University celebrates Founder's Day

The community is invited to join Concord University faculty, staff, and students to celebrate Founders' Day on Wednesday, February 28 at 3 p.m. in the Anderson Family Theatre of the Alexander Fine Arts Center. The Mountain Lion family will celebrate 152 years of service to the region and beyond.

President Kendra Boggess will present the Presidential Excellence Awards, recognition of faculty, staff, auxiliary staff and students who have clearly demonstrated dedication to Concord University and the surrounding community. Guests are invited to enjoy refreshments following the presentation. This year's keynote speaker is Brandon Hicks. Hicks is a 2017 graduate of Concord University with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Tourism Management. He has used his courses of study as a foundation for the family of businesses he has developed.
