Bright Red Aurora Spotted Above Northern Wisconsin

A bright aurora gave stargazers in northern Wisconsin quite a show in the early hours of Friday, December 1, showing off colors of intense red, purple, and green.

Jake Stehli, a storm chaser and aurora hunter, recorded this video, and wrote in the caption that the colors were straight off the camera with no color correction. “Bit dimmer to the eye, but the reds were so bright right into dawn!” he said.

According to the National Park Service, deep red auroras are more common in higher altitudes, while the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) said rare all-red auroras are associated with intense solar activity.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said a strong magnetic storm was observed on December 1, with conditions expected to continue into Saturday, December 2. An aurora forecast by UAF said auroral displays may be visible overhead from parts of northern Canada, all the way to New York City and possibly Raleigh, North Carolina, weather permitting.
