Bristol City duo Tommy Conway and Ross McCrorie set to make Scotland cut for Euro 2024

Bristol City duo Tommy Conway and Ross McCrorie are set to play a part at Euro 2024 as both have made the cut for Steve Clarke’s final 26-man squad.

BBC Scotland have reported that goalkeeper Craig Gordon and defender John Souttar are the two players to be omitted by Clarke from his provisional squad of 28, and Bristol Live understands Conway and McCrorie will be on the plane to Germany for the start of the tournament next week.

Scotland do have one more warm-up game, against Finland at Hampden Park on Friday night, with UEFA’s deadline for final squad omission at midnight but barring any late injuries that may occur over the 90 minutes jeopardising an individual’s place, the group is set.

It continues Conway’s whirlwind week as the Taunton-born frontman, who qualifies through his grandfather Danny, was only called up on Monday night due to an injury to Lyndon Dykes. Having met the squad on Tuesday, the 21-year-old is in line to make his debut against the Finns before preparing for his first major tournament at senior level.

Conway’s place in Germany was always likely once he received the call from Clarke due to the Scotland manager’s lack of attacking options as, outside of the Robins frontman, Che Adams of Southampton, Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland and fellow recent addition Lewis Morgan, from New York Red Bulls, are his only other forwards.

McCrorie has also benefited from injuries to others, as regular right-backs Aaron Hickey of Brentford and Everton's Nathan Patterson were ruled out earlier this month, but the 26-year-old has also fought his way into the reckoning after a devastating and career-threatening injury last year right at the start of his City career.

McCrorie suffered a bone infection in his pelvis which left his leg so weak he had to pick it up himself at times, and it was five painful months before he made his first City appearance in January before going oin to play a further 21 games for the club.

Whereas Conway looks to be competing with three other forwards for one striker’s spot in the starting XI, and given his inexperience at international level could be viewed at this stage as a likely impact substitute, McCrorie appears in a straight fight with Celtic Anthony Ralston for the right-back berth.

Having been capped at every level since Under-15s, McCrorie made his first senior appearance for Scotland in Monday’s 2-0 friendly win over Gibraltar and Clarke’s selection against Finland could offer some clues as to the intended make-up of his defence for their opening Euro 2024 fixture against Germany next Friday. Scotland face the hosts in Munich followed by games against Switzerland (June 19) and Hungary (June 23).

Conway and McCrorie will be City's only representatives at Euro 2024, although former forward Andi Weimann, who's out of contract this summer, has made Austria's provisional squad with Ralf Rangnick yet to confirm his 26.

Tomas Kalas and Adam Nagy were City players when they played for the Czech Republic and Hungary, respectively, at the last European Championships. Nagy, now of Spezia in Italy's Serie B, is in the Hungarian squad again for this year's edition.
