Bristol restaurant praised by Queen's son is added to Michelin Guide
A much-loved Clifton restaurant is among the new additions to the Michelin Guide for April. 1 York Place, which is situated on the outskirts of Clifton Village, is a small independently owned 46-seater restaurant that describes itself as 'serving the best of European food and wine in a relaxed environment'.
Having opened back in December 2023, 1 York Place is the third venture from husband and wife duo Freddy and Nessa Bird, who also run Little French in Westbury Park and Little Shop in Henleaze, their pantry and bakery store. 1 York Place offers a classic a la carte menu, with a wine list curated by Freddy himself, and dishes draw inspiration from his culinary career to date and visits to all corners of Europe.
It was recently visited by Thomas Parker Bowles, food critic and the son of Queen Camilla, and he described the Bristol restaurant as serving "luscious sausages" and "exquisitely cooked" seafood. He was inspired to pay 1 York Place a visit after an old friend tipped him off.

Listed as one of eight latest additions to the prestigious food guide, the Michelin Guide said of 1 York Place: "Deep within the Georgian lanes of Clifton, lies this neighbourhood bistro with an uncluttered feel. Sit on the ground floor to make the most of the natural light flooding in the large windows, or head down the spiral staircase for a more intimate setting.
"The date-stamped menu takes a pan-European approach, be it ricotta gnudi from Italy, squid ink bomba rice from Spain or veal schnitzel from Austria. The relaxed service is delivered with a smile and sharing dishes like whole roast chicken add to the conviviality."
The other seven additions to the guide this month were:
Rabbit, Birmingham
Montrose, Edinburgh
Kinkally, London
Bavette, Horsforth
Lasdun, London
Osters, Newcastle upon Tyne
Six, Newcastle upon Tyne
Inspectors wrote: "The selected establishments showcase the wealth of quality and diversity of styles and cuisine types in the British and Irish dining scene, from a classic French bistro to a buzzy spot inside the National Theatre itself. Newcastle has had a particularly good month, with two new restaurants in the city entering the Guide and strengthening the city’s already enticing selection."
