When and what are the Brit awards?

The British Phonographic Industry's annual popular music awards, aka the Brits, have been running since 1977 and celebrate British music excellence. As well as acknowledging the biggest acts of the year, they shining a light on the acts of the future.

The awards show has seen some incredibly memorable moments over the years: from Madonna's stage slip, to Geri's Union Jack dress and Jarvis Cocker's protest about Michael Jackson. At its best, the event promises plenty of drama and great performances – and that's even before the actual award part of the ceremony. This year's Brits will be held on Saturday March 2.

Dua Lipa has now been confirmed as a performer, with full line-up still to be announced.

The Brits will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX, with exact timings still to be confirmed. Last year, close to four million people tuned in to see the award ceremony (the highest figure in three years) after it moved to Saturday night. Due to this huge success, the ceremony will be aired, once again, during the primetime weekend slot.

Who are the predicted winners?

Raye is certainly in with a great shout, having bagged seven nominations in total. Dua Lipa and Central Cee are also up for multiple gongs.

This year there are 14 awards up for grabs: British Album of the Year, Song of the Year, British Artist of the Year, British Group, Best Pop Act, Best R&B Act, Best Dance Act, Best Dance/Alternative Act, Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act, Best New Artist, Best International Artist, Best International Group, Best International Song and Producer of the Year.

Last year, after scrapping gendered categories, not a single female artist was nominated for Artist of the Year, enraging thousands of music fans. The Brits have stuck to their guns and will not be reintroducing gendered categories, but this year's selection thankfully feels more balanced.

This year's Rising Star winner has already been announced: the 44th winner of the award, chosen by the academy's panel of voters, is The Last Dinner Party. Previous winners include Adele, Florence and the Machine, and Sam Fender.

"We are so proud beyond measure to have won the Brits Rising Star. It’s an honour to achieve something so iconic so early on in our career and we can only hope to keep making music that connects with all the incredible people who have listened to and supported us so far," said the band.

They were up against Southampton-born singer-songwriter Caity Baser and Leicester-born teenage musician Sekou, but predictably took the trophy, having had an astonishing 2023. Last year the band released their debut single, went on tour, performed at Glastonbury, and were described by the Standard as the most talked-about band in Britain.
