The choice of sandwich fillings can be as divisive as Brexit but it seems Britain is more united when it comes to their favourite.

The humble cheese sandwich is considered the best sarnie for more than half the country – with no condiments or salad items included.

Research of 2,000 Brits found that ham and cheese was the second most popular filling, followed by ham salad, with a classic sausage sandwich just missing out on the top three.

Other popular sandwich fillings include Ploughman’s – the top choice for people out for a meal – egg and cress and tuna mayonnaise.

The Christmas sandwich is the country’s favourite ‘special occasion’ filling.

And while peanut butter and jam may be a favourite for our cousins across the pond, it ended up at the bottom of the list with just 9% of Brits enjoying the American classic.

The findings by Warburtons also found Brits will eat an average of four sandwiches a week, with 82% naming it their favourite lunchtime meal.

When it comes to crusts, seven in 10 reckon they should be left on, while three in 10 choose to cut their sarnie diagonally.

Some 25% of Brits will change their sandwich eating habits depending on the occasion, with a quarter anticipating a more ‘premium’ sandwich choice for their picnic to commemorate the Royal Wedding this weekend.

The most popular superior sandwich to toast Harry and Meghan will be Coronation chicken, followed by BBQ pulled pork and chicken and pesto.

But more than one in 10 believe the Queen will be nibbling her way through cucumber sandwiches on the big day, while smoked salmon and cream cheese is the most popular choice for the guests.

A spokesman for Warburtons said: ‘It has been reported that some guests to this weekend’s Royal Wedding will have to bring their own picnic, so we were keen to find out just how the nation takes its sandwiches.

‘Our research shows the UK has declared the humble cheese sandwich as its number one filling.

‘With so much choice these days, it’s interesting to see such a classic retain it’s crown.

‘Varying from the norm isn’t uncommon though for special occasions. Smoked salmon and cream cheese topped the list for celebrating the Royal wedding, with our research suggesting the Queen is expected to enjoy the quintessentially British cucumber sandwiches.’
