British company brings the DeLorean DMC-12 back to the future by making it electric

A British company has brought the DeLorean DMC-12 back to the future by making it electric.

Electrogenic has revealed a 'plug-and-play' conversion kit for the iconic motor, replacing the infamous V6 engine from the 1980s movie icon with a more efficient and quieter electric vehicle (EV) system.

Based in Oxfordshire, the company has a history of converting classic models like the Citroën DS, Land Rover Defender, and Jaguar E-Type to electric. They now offer a 'drop-in' EV conversion kit specifically for the DMC-12.

The conversion is completely reversible and reportedly enhances the coupe into a "true sports car" with increased power and significantly improved performance.

Steve Drummond, CEO of Electrogenic, commented: "With its sci-fi design - still jaw-dropping over 40 years on - and underwhelming engine, (the DMC-12) really is the perfect candidate for conversion to electric drive. "We're now delighted to reveal our plug-and-play conversion package to the world."

The design retains the vehicle's original framework, integrating an "OEM-grade" 43kWh battery in the former location of the rear-mounted fuel tank and incorporating the electric motor into the rear axle.

The motor produces 215bhp and 229 lb-ft of torque, delivered through a fixed-ratio gearbox. It accelerates from 0-62mph in just 5.0 seconds, a substantial improvement over the original model.

This model marks Electrogenic's first venture into launch control features. The kit is compatible with the original DMC-12s, whether they have manual or automatic transmissions, and only increases the vehicle's weight by 40kg.
