British holidaymakers bound for Italy have been slapped with a severe 'health and hygiene warning' amid a calamitous situation at a beloved tourist destination.

A dire water crisis has erupted on the Italian island of Capri, a hotspot for UK visitors, leading to a complete cut-off of the water supply in vast swathes of the area. Consequently, Capri's mayor has urgently prohibited any new tourists from entering the island as the absence of water means that basic services 'cannot be guaranteed'.

The lack of water makes it unfeasible to provide fundamental services to the "thousands of people" who flock to the island each day during peak season, according to mayor Paolo Falco, reports the Express.

"The health and hygiene situation is explosive, we have taken our countermeasures and activated the crisis unit and issued a restrictive order," read the statement from the mayor's office

The crisis was triggered by a malfunction in the mainland's water system, which is crucial for supplying the renowned island. Currently, water continues to flow to most parts of the island, but certain remote areas in the higher region of Anacapri are already experiencing shortages.

With the mainland supplies cut off, only the island's own reservoirs are feeding the water network, which could soon be depleted. In the interim, additional tanks are being dispatched to the island to maintain vital services until the full water supply is restored.

The mayor's directive was communicated just after 9am local time, resulting in an immediate halt to the sale of travel tickets. The decision has resulted in lengthy queues at ticket offices in Naples, the main departure point for most ferries to Capri.

Ferries and hydrofoils already en route to Capri were contacted via radio by maritime authorities, who instructed them to return to port and disembark passengers.
