Brits share 'truth' about Benidorm - from 40mph scooters to feuding families

Brits have been sharing experiences on one of the most popular Spanish beaches - and some are eye-opening. Many of us will be preparing for a foreign jaunt this summer, and Benidorm will be on the cards for hundreds of thousands from the UK.

However, a British holidaymaker has blasted the renowned Benidorm hotspot, Playa de Levante, swearing off a return visit following a harrowing encounter with a recklessly driven mobility scooter. The beach, stretching over 2 kilometres and a magnet for sun worshippers, particularly from the UK, enjoys a prime spot on Spain's eastern coast, basking in the balmy Mediterranean climate.

Some Brits are growing disillusioned with this beloved seaside destination. One tourist recounted a near miss with a mobility scooter zooming by at breakneck speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Kieran M vented his frustration on Tripadvisor, stating: "Don't get me wrong the place was lovely and very close to the UK as I don't like flying but the only thing I detest with a vengeance is the way the scooters and them mobility scooters are used."

He continued, expressing his shock at the reckless scooter use: "I know scooters are used for work to deliver food and other things, but when someone goes around a tight corner at nearly 30-40 miles an hour - even other tourists were shocked as it nearly missed them."

"It also nearly missed me by a few feet. I'd rather not go back there as I don't fancy being in the hospital, in an ICU or any other ward - maybe even dead given your own bad health so I will never be back," reports the Express.

Kieran M further commented on the danger posed by these vehicles: "I even saw a woman being hit just walking through the old town and hurt her wrist. So Benidorm, no thanks it's too many accidents waiting to happen.."

In 2023, Benidorm welcomed nearly three million visitors, with over 800,000 Brits flocking to the resort. However, its popularity may be its downfall as complaints about overcrowding have surged, particularly regarding its packed beaches.

Helen M expressed her disappointment: "Too many people, couldn't see the beach for bodies! Benidorm is dirty and if you are a vegetarian don't visit this town."

Poochie75 also shared frustrations: "Soooo busy and beds are very expensive. Too much for the children to deal with so went back to our holiday hotel."

Yet, not everyone is put off by the bustling scene. Neil K praised the area, saying: "Levante Beach is the beach of the New Town and a wonderful beach at that," and continued to compliment the clean sand, clear waters, and excellent beach facilities.

He further recommended the destination: "Benidorm is an amazing and extremely popular sun kissed resort and most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning a holiday to the wonderful country of Spain."
