UK holidaymakers are considering a switch from Spain to destinations like Greece and Italy due to new financial requirements imposed by Spanish authorities. The recent enforcement of a rule demanding proof of sufficient funds for a stay has sparked outrage among British tourists.

Under the latest EU regulations, Britons visiting Spain may now need to demonstrate they have at least £98-per-person available for each day of their visit. This means a family of four planning a week-long holiday would need to show they have a minimum of £2,740 in spending money.

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, stating: "If you enter the Schengen area as a tourist, you may need to provide additional documents at the border. As well as a valid return or onward ticket, when travelling to Spain you could be asked to show you have enough money for your stay." For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here

Social media users have been vocal about the changes, with one commenting: "Stop going they'll soon stop it. Simple. There's bags of other places, Greece, Turkey, Malta, Italy you name it... and cheaper too."

Another remarked on the potential impact on Spanish tourism, saying: "What would actually happen to these Spanish resorts and the people that live there......if everyone just stopped going...stopped spending their money there..", reports Birmingham Live.

"What would happen then....? Have not their local authorities and tourism board even thought about this.....about the consequences ...? " remarked one. Another chimed in with: "Brits need to broaden their horizons. There is a great big world out there waiting for you to visit. Give Spain and other EU countries a miss that insist on these "rules"." A third added in defence of Spain: "The law was there long b4 brexit and it's not just aimed at brits ... it's aimed at everyone eu members or not, but nobody ever checks unless you look like a vagrant (that's mostly remainers then - Bob geldof is the classic example) ... so stop the panic,".

Another contributor praised the changes, saying: "I go on holiday to get away from the lower orders. This is a positive and welcome development."
